A new, clinically proven way to treat depression at home

Flow is being used by GPs, psychiatrists, postnatal teams and crisis services to treat depression across the country.

Independent, published studies from the NHS say that Flow is “effective, measurable and with limited side effects” and that “feedback has been overwhelmingly positive”. An NHS Crisis Service saw:

  • up to a 75% drop in suicidal ideation
  • significant improvement in patient mood within 2-3 weeks.

Dr.Online ensures you’re never alone: our clinicians monitor your progress and guide you throughout your Flow treatment.

  • What is Flow Neuroscience?

Flow is a class IIa medical device certified for the treatment of unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults, either as monotherapy or as an adjunct with antidepressants and psychological therapies.

    The Science Behind Flow

    • Depression reduces activity in the frontal cortex — the area controlling mood, sleep, and motivation.

    • Flow delivers mild electrical impulses to stimulate that part of your brain.

    • This technique, known as tDCS (transcranial Direct Current Stimulation), helps neurons fire again and improves symptoms.

Flow allows you to access this clinic-level treatment from home, affordably.

About Flow Neuroscience - Frequently Asked Questions

The Flow headset has been designed and extensively tested by experts. It is CE-certified and complies with all European and UK laws for medical devices. It has also received the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Breakthrough Device Designation for at-home depression treatment in the United States.

The technology Flow uses is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). tDCS has been used in clinical settings for decades, and its safety and performance has been evaluated in hundreds of clinical trials. To learn more about the safety and performance of Flow in these clinical trials, visit the Research page.

It is important to always use Flow Neuroscience in accordance with the user manual

Over 20,000 people have used Flow Neuroscience and less than 5% have reported side effects

The most common side effects experienced are:

    • Skin reactions (redness, irritation, itching, stinging, minor burns)
    • Headache
    • Tinnitus
    • Worsened symptoms of depression including increased anxiety
    • Tiredness, fatigue and general malaise including sleep disruption

These side effects typically resolve within a few hours to no more than a few days, and many users tend to adapt to the treatment over time, resulting in a reduction or disappearance of side effects with continued use.

Flow Neuroscience is certified solely as a treatment for depression. Although it is deemed safe to use Flow for depression alongside other conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we strongly advise against using Flow Neuroscience for any purpose other than depression treatment.

Our doctors have been trained to offer patients careful clinical oversight for their depression treatment through Flow Neuroscience enabling a more in depth assessment and treatment schedule than if you were to use the headset alone. They are also able to tailor/edit the settings in the headset (not available for the standard treatment options).

Complete initial 10-week treatment program – stimulate 5 times a week for 3 weeks, and then 3 times a week for 7 weeks.

We then evaluate if Flow Neuroscience is effective for the patient.

If it is helpful, continuation of stimulation occurs 3 times a week for another 6-12 months to help prevent you from relapsing and maintain your improvements.

Please note: treatment schedules can be further customised according to individual need as some patients may benefit from a more intensive stimulation schedule.
