What is Gastritis?
Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining, which can cause upper abdominal pain, nausea, and indigestion. It may appear suddenly (acute) or develop gradually (chronic).
Anyone can develop gastritis, and while many cases are mild, some require medical treatment to prevent complications.
What Causes Gastritis?
Infections
- H. pylori bacterial infection
Irritants
- Alcohol
- Spicy foods
- NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin)
Medical Conditions
- Autoimmune gastritis
- Acid reflux (GORD)
- Stress-related gastritis
What Are the Common Symptoms of Gastritis?
- Upper abdominal pain or discomfort
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Loss of appetite
- Indigestion or burning sensation
- Vomiting
How Is Gastritis Diagnosed?
A GP will ask about symptoms, medications, alcohol intake, and food triggers.
During an online consultation, a GP can:
- Assess likely causes
- Recommend treatment
- Prescribe acid-reducing medication if appropriate
In-person assessment may include:
- H. pylori stool test
- Blood tests
- Endoscopy if red-flag symptoms are present
How Long Does Gastritis Last?
- Acute gastritis: a few days to a couple of weeks
- Chronic gastritis: may persist for months if underlying causes are not addressed.
- Recovery time depends on trigger removal, treatment adherence, and lifestyle factors.
