Impetigo

What is impetigo?

Impetigo is a very common, contagious, bacterial skin infection.  It is most common in young children and is seen on the face.

What causes impetigo?

  • Breaks in the skin barrier such as cuts, burns or eczema
  • Warm weather
  • Crowded environments with skin-skin contact

What are the common symptoms of impetigo?

  • Sore or itchy red patches/ blisters on the skin
  • Golden brown crusts
  • Yellow discharge

How is impetigo diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and examination.

During an online GP consultation, we can:

  • Assess symptoms and risk factors
  • Provide treatment advice or prescriptions if needed

NB. You may need in-person assessment if the diagnosis is unclear and a physical examination/ skin swab is required.

When to seek urgent medical help

Go to A&E or seek urgent help if you have:

  • Immunosuppression (a weakened immune system) and the rash is widespread
  • You are unwell in yourself, and ‘sepsis’ is suspected
  • The rash starts to look different or is rapidly spreading

What are treatment and management options for impetigo?

Self-Care and Home Management

Impetigo will usually get better by itself within 3 weeks.

It is important to take measures to prevent the spread of impetigo to other areas of the body and to other people.  Some tips on how to prevent spread:

  • do not share towels/ pillow cases – was at a high temperature after each use
  • avoid touching or scratching the rash
  • avoid contact with newborn babies, anyone who is immunosuppressed or playing contact sports
  • check school/ work exclusion policy
  • wash your hands regularly

Treatment from a GP

A GP can help with:

  • Confirming the diagnosis.
  • Recommendations on treatment to speed up resolution- such as a hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic cream or antibiotic tablet.
  • Treating any underlying skin issues such as eczema
  • Advice on when symptoms may indicate complications.·

When Referral is Needed

You may need further assessment by a dermatologist if symptoms persist, worsen despite initial care or the diagnosis is unclear.
