The recent approval of the first oral GLP-1 weight loss medication in the UK marks an exciting step forward in obesity treatment. For the first time, eligible patients will soon have access to a tablet version of Wegovy® (semaglutide), offering an alternative to weekly injections.
At Dr.Online, we welcome greater patient choice. However, whilst medications such as Wegovy® and Mounjaro® can be highly effective, lasting success comes from combining treatment with healthy lifestyle habits—not medication alone.
Our Approach: More Than Weight Loss
We focus on improving overall health and body composition, not simply lowering the number on the scales.
One of the biggest risks during rapid weight loss is losing muscle alongside fat. This can contribute to sarcopenic obesity—where patients become lighter but also weaker, with a slower metabolism and poorer long-term health outcomes.
Whether you’re taking Mounjaro®, Wegovy® injections, or considering the new Wegovy® pill, our goal is to help you lose fat whilst preserving lean muscle mass.
The Four Foundations of Healthy Weight Loss
Prioritise Protein
GLP-1 medications often reduce appetite significantly, making adequate protein intake even more important. Protein helps preserve muscle mass, improves satiety and supports recovery.
Stay Hydrated
Many common side effects associated with GLP-1 medications can be worsened by
dehydration. Adequate fluid intake supports digestion, energy levels and overall wellbeing.
Maintain a Modest Calorie Deficit
Weight loss requires a calorie deficit, but extreme restriction is rarely sustainable. We encourage a sensible, manageable deficit that promotes steady fat loss whilst preserving muscle and nutritional health.
Incorporate Resistance Exercise
Strength training, resistance bands, Pilates and bodyweight exercises can all help preserve lean muscle mass during weight loss. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent sarcopenic obesity and maintain long-term metabolic health.
How Does the Wegovy Pill Work?
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in Wegovy
injections. It works by reducing appetite, increasing feelings of fullness and helping patientsnaturally consume fewer calories.
Unlike the weekly injection, the tablet must be taken correctly to ensure absorption:
- First thing in the morning
- On an empty stomach
- With a small amount of water
- At least 30 minutes before food, drink or other medications
Switching from Wegovy Injections to the Wegovy Pill
Novo Nordisk’s current guidance advises that patients taking the maintenance dose of Wegovy 2.4 mg once weekly can:
Start Wegovy® pill 25 mg once daily, 7 days after their last Wegovy® 2.4 mg injection.
For patients on lower doses of Wegovy injections, individual prescribing advice will be required, and your clinician will recommend the most appropriate starting dose.
What Should You Expect During the Switch?
Many patients transition successfully from injections to tablets, but there are some important considerations:
- Hunger may temporarily increase during the switch.
- Nausea, bloating or digestive side effects may reappear initially.
- Weight loss may plateau during the early stages of treatment.
- Daily adherence becomes particularly important, as missed tablets can reduce
effectiveness.
Patients may choose to switch for several reasons, including convenience, travel, needle avoidance, cost considerations or personal preference.
Looking Ahead
The arrival of the Wegovy pill is an important development and offers greater flexibility for patients seeking medical support with weight management.
At Dr.Online, we are closely monitoring its launch and look forward to supporting suitable patients who wish to transition from injectable therapy or begin GLP-1 treatment for the first time.
Most importantly, whether you choose injections or tablets, the fundamentals remain unchanged:
Prioritise protein. Stay hydrated. Strength train regularly. Maintain a sensible calorie deficit.
Medication can be a powerful tool, but long-term success comes from sustainable habits that protect your health, metabolism and muscle mass for years to come.
